Goal Setting Games

It is never to early to teach your child goal setting. When children learn to set goals early in their lives, they will more than likely continue the practice into their adulthood. Obviously, when children are very young, the goals should be very simple and the goal planning should be fun, even a game. There are many goal setting games you can play with your children. As long as the children know that the goals they are setting are real and you will expect them to follow the goals, this experience will certainly be worthwhile.

The goals setting games will grow in difficulty as your children ages. When children are very young, the goals will be very simple as will be the game. Generally, parents want their young children to pick up their toys. This seems to be a never ending challenge. To make this chore into a goal setting game is very easy. Sit down with your child and ask him for five treats he really loves. Write each treat down on a piece of paper. Then talk to your child about setting the goal of picking up his toys each day before he goes to bed. Set a time. Then tell your child to choose one of the treats from the box. After a week of picking up the toys on time, the child gets the treat. Knowing ahead of time what the treat is helps reinforce he goal. If the child forgets or refuses to pick up the toys, the weeks starts over. At first you may help with the toys but as the child grows up, he will start doing more and more by himself. He might even do a better job of not throwing his toys around. When the week is over, make a big deal of giving him the treat. Repeat this process until the goal becomes a lifestle change.

In school teachers often lead their students in goal setting games. The teacher can divide the class into groups of three or four. Each group will decide on a goal for the class for the week. Then a leader for each group will report the goal and write it on the board. Each group leader will explain why their goal for the week is the best. Then the class will vote on which goal is best. The top vote getter will be the class goal. If everyone is the class attains the goal, the teacher gives the class a treat such as an extra story hour or a no homework day.

Almost every elementary school has a career day when parents come to the school to explain their careers. Then each of the parents tell the students one goal that helped them to attain their profession. Then after the parents have left, the students can match the goal to the profession. After the students finish, everyone can discuss how the goal led to the profession.

Making goal setting fun is a great way to help kids become goal setters. Creating goal setting games is a perfect way to make goal setting become a part of your child’s life.
