Goal Setting Teens

The high school years are crucial to achieving success later in life. I know that many movie stars and recording stars never finished high school, but their successes are few and far between. For every one of these success stories, there are thousands of high school students who do graduate but wish they could start over again because they never did any goal setting. The goal setting teens are already ahead of the game before they even enter high school. They are ready for the trials and tribulations of high school and have strategies to fulfill these goals.

Many teens are already self-starters when they enter high school. They have set goals for themselves and are ready to attain them. They plan their classes with college in mind and the careers that they are interested in. The goal setting teens are few and far between without help from their parents. Helping you child set goals can be a wonderful bonding experience if you don’t do all the planning yourself. The teen years are often rebellious years so don’t try to strong arm your teen. Work with them for the goal setting.

Many teens are simply not interested in college as they enter high school, but they often change their minds later. The converse is also true. Fortunantly, most school offer a college prep diploma with an additional career tech seal. That diploma simply means that the graduate took a college prep academic track but also tool career tech classes. These classes may include work study programs to computer and technology courses. Therefore, if your child isn’t sure what his high school academic goals are he can choose both tracks. Upon graduation he is ready for college or technical schools.

Next comes some very simple sounding goals but these goals might well mean the difference between high school success and failure. Because the middle school years are so different from high school, many teens are simply not ready for the new challenges. Some very small goals may help with the transition. First take you teen to an office supply store or a school supply store to buy an assignment book. Because there is so much homework in high school, some teens can’t seem to keep up with deadlines and home work assignments. If your teen starts the first day of high school keeping an assignment book, before school really becomes difficult, he will be so accustomed to writing down all of his assignments; it will become second nature to him. An organized student most likely makes better grades because he always knows what is expected of him.

Goal setting teens need to be sure to make goals that are realistic. If your teen is very smart, setting a goal of having a 4.0 GPA upon graduation is realistic. If your teen is an average student, a goal of 3.0 is more realistic and less likely to add to stress and frustration already present in high school. The old adage of just do your best works well when unrealistic goals are set. Besides you never know; you might have an overachiever.

Goal setting teens may also set character goals. Deciding on a goal of not cheating during his high school years is a wonderful goal. In a time when many students even gifted ones cheat, making a goal of academic integrity is a wonderful way to start high school. Help your teen to understand that graduation with the knowledge that he did his best and was always honest is the best gift he can ever give himself and his parents.
