High School Goal Setting

High school is the time when students begin thinking about college, scholarships, and careers. Unfortunately, most students don’t start thinking about high school goal setting before they are seniors. The senior year is not the time for setting goals; it is the time to start completing the goals.

The best time to start high school goal setting is the freshman year. Although the freshman year is often difficult and emotional, it is one of the most important times in a high school student’s career. This is the time when decisions can affect the rest of a student’s life. Often students spend the rest of their high school years trying to make up for the mistakes they made as ninth graders.

One of the most important goals a freshman can make is to decide to make good grades or at least to pass all of his course work. Even a poor student can start fresh during his first year of high school. The bad habits of the past can be overcome if the student makes some very important goals. The first and foremost goal should be to complete all assignments on time. One of the major reasons for failure is not completing assignments. A zero or a many zero grades will inevitably result in failure. Even is a student doesn’t make high grades on test, he can pass classes if he simply does his assignments even if they are dull and repetitive.

High school goal setting that starts the freshman year impacts a student whole life. When a student makes the goal of completing assignments is often so busy in class that he can also set a good behavior goal or a character goal. Even someone known as the class clown in middle school can make a turnaround in high school. If he is completing all of his assignments, he doesn’t have time for bad behavior. After a few months of not getting in trouble at school, his home life will probably improve also. After realizing that good goal setting makes life better, he will set other goals.

Many students begin their high school careers having already set goals. These students know the college they want to attend, have career goals, and know that they need scholarships to attend school. These students set the goal of scholastic excellence, model behavior, and attaining their goals. They also know that to get scholarships they must be active in school sports and activities. In these clubs and activities, they learn the importance of community involvement. Some even decide to set the goal of doing even more community service. These goals mean a very busy high school career. Everyone knows a busy student is much less likely to get into trouble.

High school goal setting is relatively easy. Following through with the goals is much harder. Keeping the goals takes perseverance and time, but the result is worth the effort. The high school years set the stage for the rest of a teen’s life, good or bad. The choice is yours. Make the goals, keep them, and find success.
