Teach Goal Setting

Every school should teach goal setting. From pre-school to doctoral studies, students benefit from learning goal setting. Of course, the pre-schoolers learn very simple goals, but they are as important as the goals the doctoral students learn. Goal setters do better in life because they understand that goals are a means to an end.

If teachers are to teach goal setting, they should learn the process in their education classes. Rather than learning theories about child development, they should be taught the process of goal setting so that they can teach their children the process. Pre-school teachers have to teach their students the rudiments of good behavior at school. Although pre-schoolers are a little young to understand goals, they can learn the necessary rules of good behavior.

Pre-school children learn that unless they want to get in trouble they have to stay in their seats, speak only when they raise their hands, and do their own work. They learn that when they behave, they receive praise from their teacher and do not get punished. When they start coloring, they learn that the best grades go to the children who color inside the lines. They begin to understand that home behavior and school behavior are very different. Even though these new behaviors are actually goals, they don’t understand them that way.

As elementary school students begin to grow up, they start to learn that good students set goals for themselves. The teacher starts to teach goal setting for character building. She helps her students learn to improve their behavior by setting goals for themselves. Asking them to keep a goal notebook is a great way to start. Ask the students to write down one academic goal. Give them some examples to help them to get started. Some of the more obvious choices are: I am going to complete all assignments or I am going to be on time with all assignments. These goals will certainly improve the students’ grades and behavior.

After the students choose a goal, help them to keep track of their progress. Teachers who teach goal setting have noticed a definite improvement in their students. After the first goals are met, it is time to move on to other ones. As the students get older, their goals will mature with them.

Students should always choose goals with an end in mind. The goal setting process is quite simple. The end is the desire to get better grades. The goal is to complete all assignments and to do them on time. These goals will certainly have the desired effect. As students learn that goals do improve their lives, they will be much more inclined to set more goals.

All teachers should teach goal setting. Goal setting is one of the most important processes students can learn. These goal setting skills will support them for the rest of their lives.
